Quito is one of the seven architectonics wonders and the capital of Ecuador with about 2,2 million inhabitants and 422.802 hectares. It is a large and narrow city with 80 km long and 5 km wide, easy to identify the center -old town, south, and north – new town of Quito.
The name of Quito comes from prehispanic history; Quitus tribe lived on the territory before Inca’s arrival and the Spanish conquerors. During the Quitus and Inca Empire there were important incidents in the city that now belongs to Ecuador. The Incas – Atahualpa and Rumiñahui fought against Spaniards in 1533 with their army although it could not stop the foreign advance.
During the colonization on December 6th 1534, with 204 settlers the Spaniards established San Francisco de Quito on the ground belonged to Quitus and Incas in the place known as Old Town. After years, Catholic missioners built big churches as Cathedral, San Francisco, Santo Domingo and others. Religiosity was a large part of the people’s identity, and all the lives were revolved around these centers of worship. Garcia Moreno street or also called as “ the street of the seven crosses” because on this street, there are seven churches of seven different congregations.
It was years for Quito’s independence on August 10th 1809; many people felt the needs of new life model people were killed by the Spaniards. Almost 20 years later, Simon Bolivar established big nation named Gran Colombia, Ecuador born; Quito was taken as the capital.

In the contemporary period, Quito was a place where important part to the history occurred as President’s killers, coups and defense of political legitimacy. On September 18th 1978, Quito was declared First Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO for its preserve colonial side – Old Town.
The Old town is one of the most spectacular in South America; no other downtown in the region has the characteristics and size of it. Since 1980s, the city increase and began to develop a tourist conscious until now.
